Band recording: estimating budget and time

Bands ask the same things: how many days, what it costs, what is included. This guide ties Band recording to real numbers and studio rules at Okiatech in Oud-West.

Empty live room with drums, guitar amp and bass ready to record

What you book

Band recording is tracking in our 38 m² live room with sight lines to the control room. Up to 5 players at once; everyone gets a separate headphone mix. We have 12 mic preamps — enough for drums, bass, guitars and vocals without constant repatching.

The engineer — often Maarten van der Berg on larger sessions — handles routing, takes and a rough balance. That is tracking day, not final mix: polish means separate Mixing (€235 per title, 2 revision rounds included). Budget both lines.

Core session rates

Two packages cover most bands:

Band recording rates (incl. 21% VAT)
PackagePriceTypical use
Half day (4 h)€385Single or two basic tracks
Full day (8 h)€695EP sketch or full set live

Net for business invoicing: half day €318.18, full day €574.38. No hidden «per musician» fee within the 5-player cap.

Deposit, cancellation and payment

After we agree a date we ask for a 35% deposit to hold the calendar. Cancel or move free of charge up to 5 days before the session; after that terms and conditions apply. B2B clients get 14 days to pay the balance invoice.

Unused time inside a booked block does not automatically become credit unless we confirm that in writing. If the band finishes early we may use spare minutes for quick overdubs — practical, not guaranteed.

How much fits in four or eight hours?

Rehearsal level decides everything. A single you played live fifty times: often 3–4 hours including drum setup and soundcheck. Five new songs with shifting tempos: plan a full day and do not book mastering the same evening.

Drums eat setup time; track those first. Bass and guitar right after drums avoids repeated tuning. Vocals can overdub in the 10 m² booth if the live take is noisy — see vocal preparation.

Travel, parking and Amsterdam logistics

We are at Eerste Helmersstraat 42 in Amsterdam; Tram and bike are the most predictable options: Tram 3 or 12 to Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat, then about four minutes on foot. Tram 1 or 7 to Leidseplein, then roughly eight minutes via Overtoom. Bike rack in front of the building.. There is a bike rack out front; cars in Oud-West mean street parking or a nearby garage — budget parking yourself, it is outside our invoice.

Load-in through the canal-house entrance: compact backline fits; huge stacks we discuss upfront via email. Need to play past 21:00? Regular hours end Saturday at 18:00; evening slots on request within Monday to Friday 09:00–21:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00, by appointment only.

Post-production: mix, master, archive

Budget €235 per title for mix; each extra stem above the standard track costs €45. Mastering: €72 per song or €295 for a four-to-six-track EP — see master delivery formats.

We keep raw projects 9 months; then we delete unless you buy an extension. Export stems yourself if you mix elsewhere — delivering mix stems explains how we want files.

Sample budgets

Demo single: half day €385 plus mix €235 plus master €72 — add the three lines for studio services before travel.

Four-track EP: full day €695 + four mixes at €235 + EP master €295 — book two tracking days if arrangements are heavy.

Live takes only, mix later: day €695; keep tempo maps and file naming consistent for whoever mixes next.

Intake and quote

Send contact a short brief: genre, track count, lineup, target month. We reply within 2 business days with availability and a range. Minimum age in the studio is 16; younger musicians need a parent or guardian on site.
